Sunday 3rd April NICE / LEVENS / NICE

Total 67 Km

Liaison 42 Km – Spéciale 4 Km – Liaison 21 Km

Super Spéciale:

The route followed is the same as in 2004. It is in fact a mountainside firebreak trail, which crosses a small pass before heading back down towards the finish. The track is narrow and technical (although not damaging) and held a few surprises last year. As is often the case with these initial stages, competitors making mistakes have more to lose than to win, so care is needed!

After the stage, the competitors will take on board on the Daniele Casanova.
After one night on the boat they will arrive in Tunis and go to Le Kef for the first bivouac.

Étape 1 -

Monday 4th April

TUNIS / LE KEF

Transfert 5 Km – Spéciale 279 Km – Liaison 1 Km

Arriving from the port of La Goulette, the Rally caravan will travel by road to the first bivouac set up fairly near to town of Le Kef in the north of the country, near to the Algerian border.

Étape 2 -

Tuesday 5th April

LE KEF / TAMERZA

Transfert 5 Km – Spéciale 279 Km – Liaison 1 Km

The Race:

From the start to the end of the stage, competitors will follow the Algerian border. This will be the only special stage of the Tunisian week to offer such a variety of scenery, ranging from pine forests to crop fields, deserts and mountains… One of the event’s most magical moments will be when the track passes the foot of Jugurtha’s Table. This special stage will also be one of the most technical stages of the Rally, with a few entertaining mountain passes on the agenda. On the navigation side, the road book should be followed carefully, firstly because there is no GPS point (in fact, there are none throughout the entire event) and secondly because of the many changes in direction. A large oued is crossed towards the end of the stage. Competitors will again see a few border posts, reminders that Algeria is close by, before arriving at the Tamerza bivouac set up in the heart of the mountains.

In the bikes Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) came from behind to win the first Tunisian stage in convincing fashion 10’12 ahead of team mate Chris Blais and 15’58 in front of Carlo De Gavardo. Gauloises KTM team mate Andy Grider was 6th at 28’58.
In the cars victory went to Luc Alphand ahead of Masuoka (at 1’54) and Kleinschmidt (at 2’04). Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) was first 2-wheel drive buggy home in 5th place (at 4’12). In the T2 production class it was Jean-Pierre Strugo (Gauloises Mercedes) was quickest, finishing in 14th place (18’56) ahead of Rousselot with Pascal Thomasse (Gauloises Mercedes) 3rd T2 (16th at 21’00).

Staff comments:

Jean-Louis Schlesser (Fra/Buggy Ford) : «I knew that the stage will be muddy, especially on the first third, we decided to fit the mud tires, but our buggy two wheels driving was inevitably handicapped on a slipping layout. The left mudguard   which yielded under the weight of mud"

Étape 3 -

Wednesday 6th April

TAMERZA / SABRIA

Transfert 19 Km – Spéciale 240 Km – Liaison 32 Km

The Race:

At the start of the special stage, the track offers very good going on sandy ground. Then it becomes narrow and bumpy before reaching the assistance point. Competitors will then cross the El Jerid chott, where they should make sure they stick to the ideal path if they wish to avoid the many hazards this type of terrain can hold. Leaving the chott, the first white dunes will remind all competitors to keep a close eye on their bearings (and tyre pressures too, if they want to avoid having to use the shovel!). The end of the special stage will be very fast as the competitors again cross the El Jerid chott before the finish line. A 32-kilometre liaison will then take them to the bivouac set up in the dunes, near to a stretch of water where the largest colony of dromedaries in Tunisia comes to drink.

In the bikes difficult navigation saw yesterday’s overall leader Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) lose valuable time, the Frenchman finally finishing in 5th place at 14’10 from the eventual winner Casteu. Second was De Gavardo (at 1’57) with Despres’ team mate Chris Blais (Gauloises KTM) 3rd (at 6’20). The American rookie Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) was 8th (at 24’30). Overall Despres maintains his lead, 2’10 in front of Blais with De Gavardo 3rd (at 3’21).
In the cars victory went to Masuoka 1’55 ahead of Saby with Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 3rd at 3’53. Overall Masuoka leads Saby by 3’40 with Alphand 3rd (at 4’58) and Jean Louis 4th at 6’24.

Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) 5th (at 14’10) 1st overall

“Early on my cap repeater stuck and it took me about 4 km before I realised. As I didn’t want to turn back I carried on to a village and found my way from there. Then at about km 175 I realised that I had a problem with my trip. It was turning but giving me 500 metres for every 2 km and that caused me to get lost again. I went into some really soft sand and must have stuck 10 times. One time the front wheel disappeared completely and I had to dig it out with my hands! In short, pretty much everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. A day to forget in a hurry.”

Chris Blais (Gauloises KTM) 3rd (at 6’20) 2nd overall (at 2’10)

“I got lost twice but I don’t think I was the only one! At least I didn’t have any crashes – though I did get stuck three times. You know things aren’t going too badly when you get to a CP and Cyril (Despres) hasn’t arrived yet. Overall I’m pretty pleased with how my day went.”

Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) 8th (at 24’30) 6th overall (at 38’58)

“I’m here and didn’t crash all day so I must have had a good ride! I got lost in the sand dunes before CP3 and didn’t trust my instincts when I should have. In the end I must have lost 15 minutes going around in circles. Eventually I used the GPS to get back into the corridor and picked up the right piste. My body feels very sore today after yesterday’s crash.”

Jean Pierre Strugo (Gauloises Mercedes) 20th (at 1.15’05) 16th overall (at 1.32’43)

“A frustrating day. At CP4 we were in 7th place and going really well when the gearbox got stuck in second. In all we lost 40 minutes…”

Staff comments:

Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 3rd (at 3’53) 4th overall (at 6’24)

“The going was well suited to our car and we had no particular problems so I am a little disappointed that we didn’t do better.”

Étape 4 -

Thursday 7th April

SABRIA  / SABRIA

Transfert 52 Km – Spéciale 315 Km – Liaison 41 Km

The Race:

This first loop is totally new. At the start of the special stage, an off-track section over the only camel grass of the Rally will certainly conjure up happy memories for some! Next, the first small dunes will appear on either side of the route, which runs down an old oil track covered by drifts of sand. The competitors will cross the famous “pipeline track”, before beginning a section that will require all the drivers’ skills, taking them to the foothills of the Anti-Atlas mountains to the south of Tataouine. They will then bear west to reach KSAR GHILANE on tracks of varying quality. From KSAR, an off-track section over sandy terrain will take the vehicles to the BIDANE pass, before they continue on to the old well of BIRHAJ BRAHIM and end up on a fast track leading to DOUZ.
